Marching Band Techniques

David Young has taught instrumental music for 46 years, 21 as the Director of Bands at Bellevue East High School in Bellevue, Nebraska, nine years in Schuyler and several in Kansas. The Bellevue East Marching Chieftains won many top honors including the Sweepstakes Trophy in the Sioux Falls Festival of Bands, the Mid-Iowa Championships in Ankeny, the Music Bowl in Warrensburg, Mo, the AA Fiesta Bowl Parade from Tempe, Arizona, and the Red River Exhibition in Winnipeg. The Bellevue East Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble were selected to play on several NSBA State Conventions.

Mr. Young is the recipient of the Nebraska Music Educators Association Music Educators’ Hall of Fame Award, the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Don Lentz Outstanding Bandmaster Award, the Bellevue East Teacher of the Year, the Bellevue Leader “Man of the Year” in 1988, National Band Association Outstanding Jazz Educator Award & Citation of Excellence, and named three times, by three different governors as a Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska, and twice recognized by the Nebraska State Bandmasters with a Distinguished Service Award.

He holds degrees from The College of Emporia, in Emporia Kansas and Wichita State University. He has done further work at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, University of Nebraska Omaha, University of Wisconsin Whitewater, Vandercook School of Music in Chicago, and Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Jeannette, his wife, is the Music Education Supervisor and Chair of the Music Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

He retired in 2000 from Bellevue but has remained active by teaching part time at Lincoln Southeast High School in Lincoln for seven years and is in his fifth year as the band director at the College View Academy High School in Lincoln. Mr. Young has remained in active as a marching band music arranger, drill writer and adjudicator, and is in constant demand as a drill writer and music arranger for marching bands.

Mr. Young has served as the NSBA President, Secretary, Adjudication Chairman, Marching Band Chairman and is currently the NSBA web master. (nsbma.org.)

Hobbies are woodworking, fishing, and model trains (someday).
